Dealing with Intercultural Mis-Understanding
The General Capability of Intercultural Understanding is embedded in the content and elaborations of all Australian Curriculum learning areas. This is particularly so for the Social Education subjects of History and Geography. It also overlaps with the intent of the cross curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander histories and cultures and Australia’s engagement with Asia. These two webinars are designed to assist teachers develop the deep understanding of the concept of ‘culture’ required for implementation of the curriculum, as well as for dealing with cross-cultural misunderstandings within school communities.
DATES and TIME: There are two webinars in the series. They will be held on Thursday 13th March and Wednesday 19th March from 3.30 to 4.30 pm.
COST per webinar: $30 for members; $35 for non-members

WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD TAKE PART:
Webinar 2 (19/03/2014): Margaret Bornhorst, a cross-cultural specialist with a background in Multicultural Affairs Queensland, runs a consultancy that provides innovative and creative solutions to problems and challenges related to cultural and linguistic diversity. She will provide more specific examples of some of the frustrations of dealing with people whose cultural behaviours seem very different from our own. She will provide insights into the behaviours and attitudes we all need to develop in order to create positive outcomes and reduce tensions and negative perceptions. This webinar will be useful for all schools but especially those with some students from an immigrant or refugee background.
A QCT-compliant certificate will be provided. Please register by Tuesday 4th March.
