Whatever you are teaching for the next two weeks, try to find a moment or two to ask students (at all levels) what they understand about elections.
With the upcoming Queensland election, we have an opportunity to enhance or reinforce the knowledge of our future citizens. It is important that they understand that our system is rather unique, and some would say it is the fairest in the world.
Please have a look at the attached document. At the very end there is a quote from the Director of the Museum of Australian Democracy who says: I often say that if democracy were a sport, Australia would be Olympic champions.
That quote might be a perfect way to find out if students have appreciated the innovations that developed in Australia, such as the secret ballot, compulsory voting, votes for women and preferential voting.
