YEAR 10 CLASSROOM RESOURCES

Year 10 Level Description - History ( Australian Curriculum)

The modern world and Australia

The Year 10 curriculum provides a study of the history of the modern world and Australia from 1918 to the present, with an emphasis on Australia in its global context. The twentieth century became a critical period in Australia’s social, cultural, economic and political development. The transformation of the modern world during a time of political turmoil, global conflict and international cooperation provides a necessary context for understanding Australia’s development, its place within the Asia-Pacific region and its global standing.

Key inquiry questions

  • How did the nature of global conflict change during the twentieth century?
  • What were the consequences of World War II? How did these consequences shape the modern world?
  • How was Australian society affected by other significant global events and changes in this period?

Year 10 Level Description Geography - (Australian Curriculum)

There are two units of study in the Year 10 curriculum for Geography: ‘Environmental change and management’ and ‘Geographies of human wellbeing’.

‘Environmental change and management’ focuses on investigating environmental geography through an in-depth study of a specific environment. The unit begins with an overview of the environmental functions that support all life, the major challenges to their sustainability, and the environmental world views – including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples – that influence how people perceive and respond to these challenges. Students investigate a specific type of environment and environmental change in Australia and one other country. T

The key inquiry questions for Year 10 are:

  • How can the spatial variation between places and changes in environments be explained?
  • What management options exist for sustaining human and natural systems into the future?
  • How do world views influence decisions on how to manage environmental and social change?

John Howard Prime Ministerial Library

Civics Curriculum

The John Howard Prime Ministerial Library has developed a collection of accessible, curriculum-aligned Civics and Citizenship resources for students in years 9 and 10.

The learning resources developed use two key events from the Howard era - The National Firearms Agreement, and Peacekeeping in East Timor - to explore:

The process through which government policy is shaped and developed, including the role of Prime Minister and Cabinet (ACHCK103 - Year 9)
The Australian Government's role and responsibilities at a global level, for example provision of foreign aid, peacekeeping, participation in international organisations and the United Nations (ACHCK091 - Year 10).

The resources also provide teachers with a range of activities to develop students' Civic and Citizenship skills, including analysing historical sources, developing arguments, and considering different points of view.

Hosted by the University of New South Wales Canberra, the Howard Library curates exhibitions that introduce Australians to leadership and policy challenges from John Howard's Prime Ministership in a balanced and non-partisan way.
