In our recent PD session we noticed that many participants were unsure of the tripartite structure of the curriculum. They found the following diagram useful as an overview:
We also found that not everyone was familiar with or planning with the General Capabilities. For the overview, go to https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/f-10-curriculum/general-capabilities/ and then for the continua of each capability scroll down to the pdf documents. From the website: Students need opportunities to develop capabilities over time and across learning areas. What is learnt in the early years supports all subsequent learning. The learning-continua map common paths for general capability development while recognising that each student’s pace of development may be influenced by factors such as their prior experience, sense of self in the world and cognitive capacity.
These continua are crucial for whole school or whole-learning-area planning, and such planning is vital for tracking the development of habits of mind for deep (or metacognitive) learning.
Does your school or learning area use whole school planning? We would love to hear how your school does this.
